In an effort to shore up a pitching staff that has been inconsistent, the Cardinals traded away one of its top minor league prospects in exchange for a mediocre pitcher.

St. Louis sent outfielder Terry Evans to the Angels in exchange for starter Jeff Weaver. The right handed pitcher went 14-11 with the Dodgers last year and signed a one-year free agent contract with Los Angeles during this past offseason. But he never panned out like the Angels thought he would. Weaver accumulated a 6-10 record with a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts this season.

Weaver was recently sent to the Angels minor league team in favor of his younger brother, Jared. The younger sibling is 5-0 in five starts in the big leagues this year.

Evans began this season with Class A Palm Beach but quickly moved up to the Cardinals Double-A affiliate in Springfield, hitting .311 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 21 games. He was a 47th round pick by the Cardinals in 2001. He’ll resume this season with the Angels Double-A team in Arkansas.
