A federal law affecting Medicaid recipients goes into effect on July 1st. And, the Missouri Department of Social Services is ready to implement the new rules. The new law targets illegal immigrants who are not entitled to taxpayer provided Medicaid benefits and ensures U.S. citizens are receiving those benefits. Deborah Scott with the State Social Services Department says several forms of citizenship proof will be accepted, from U.S. Passports to citizenship certificates to naturalization certificates. Scott compares the law regarding Medicaid eligibility to Missouri’s new voter photo identification law. As for the July 1st compliance date, she expects the Department to be ready by being flexible with people seeking benefits. New applicants will require proof when they enroll. Those currently receiving benefits will need the proof at the time of their reevaluation.
