A national group that studies the kinds of foods school children get says Missouri schools flunk its tests. The Center for Science in the Public Interest says Missouri gets an “F” because of the poor nutritional values of foods sold in school vending machines, school stores, and in other activities outside of regular school meals. The group says Missouri schools do not monitor the unhealthy content of snacks and do not limit the sale of sports drink and whole milk, which have high levels of fat. The State Education Department has recommendations for schools to follow, but does not require them to eliminate junk food.
