The Royals finally got a twist of fate on Father’s Day beating the Astros 7-4. A fly ball off the bat of Doug Mientkiewicz in the ninth barely cleared the wall in right field giving Kansas City a 7-4 win over Houston.
Mientkiewicz’ three-run homer broke a 4-all tie and gave the Royals a series win for the first time since taking two of three from the A’s in late May. It’s their second road series win this season in 13 tries. The heroics came after Emil Brown doubled and Matt Stairs drew a walk from reliever Chad Qualls.
Reliever Jimmy Gobble pitched a perfect eighth to get the win. Ambiorix Burgos finished the ninth without a hitch to get his 10th save.
Rookie starter Brandon Duckworth pitched well enough for the Royals to get the win against his former team, but Elmer Dessens blew a 4-2 lead and ruined Duckworth’s chances of a decision. The Rookie’s effort included 5.2 innings surrendering two runs on six hits and striking out three. Dessens gave up the same amount of runs in just 1.1 innings.
The Royals have the day off today before hosting the Pirates Tuesday.
