The United States Supreme Court has decided that prisoners awaiting execution can make last-minute appeals on the basis that lethal injection is painful and therefore, cruel and unusual punishment. Missouri uses the drug combination in question. State Attorney General spokesman John Fougere says it does not mean that Missouri won’t be able to use lethal injection. Fougere says today’s decision probably raises more questions than it answers. Last February, convicted killer Michael Taylor got his execution put on hold while the High Court heard arguments in a Florida case. Taylor and the prisoner from Florida had both argued the chemicals used in lethal injection would constitute cruel and unusual punishment.
