The Mizzou baseball team is one step closer to pulling off the improbable. After losing the opening game of the NCAA Division-1 Baseball Regional to Pepperdine, the Tigers have fought off elimination three times, including twice Sunday, to set the stage for today’s game.
In the first game Sunday, MU rode the pitching performance of freshman Rick Zagone to a 2-1 win over UCLA. It was the first complete game for the freshman who allowed one run on six hits in the game. Evan Frey singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Game two saw the Tigers avenge their first round loss beating the Waves 4-1 to keep their season alive. Freshman Aaron Crowe followed the path set by classmate Zagone earlier in the day. Crowe also notched his first complete game win allowing just one run on six hits.
Pepperdine scored their only run in the first before Mizzou settled down took control of the game. The Tigers scored the game’s next four runs and never looked back. They tied the game with one run in the second and followed suit with one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Junior John McKee led the way for the Tigers going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
The two teams will play for a third time in the regional today. The winner of the game will advance to the NCAA Super Regional round.
