A 6-0 lead wasn’t enough for the Royals on Thursday in a 13-8 loss to the Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. Emil Brown’s RBI double got the Royals on the board. They added five more runs with back-to-back-to-back home runs from Tony Graffanino, Angel Berroa and Doug Mientkiewicz to make it 6-0. They scored all six runs with one out and knocked Detroit starter Mike Maroth out of the game.

But that lead wouldn’t last.

With an 8-5 advantage in the eighth, Ambiorix Burgos imploded. He took over for rookie reliever Bob Keppel after Keppel surrendered a lead-off single to Craig Monroe. Burgos got consecutive fly outs from Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge. He then allowed a single to Curtis Granderson, an RBI single to Placido Polanco and a two-run triple to Ivan Rodriguez. That tied the game at 8-8.

In the ninth it got uglier, as Elmer Dessens gave up home runs to Monroe, Thames and Rodriguez for a five-run Detroit rally and a 13-8 deficit for the Royals. Rodriguez as 2-for-4 with five RBIs and Thames was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs.

Dessens was charged with four runs in 2/3 of an inning and dropped to 2-5.

The Royals’ 13-game losing streak is the second-longest in team history. They set the record last season with a 19-game skid.
