The State Board of Education is mulling over several proposals to implement a new high school assessment program in place of the current version of the Missouri Assessment Program. And, it’s been given the results of a series of town hall meetings held to collect input from educators, parents, employers, and students, among others. Education Commissioner Kent King says the change that is eventually agreed to must focus more on making sure children are learning as opposed to the test score numbers they achieve. King concedes, however, that colleges and universities do pay a lot of attention to the ACT and in some cases the SAT results, so attention must be paid to those tests. Most of the people responding to surveys handed out at the town hall meetings expressed dissatisfaction with the current Missouri Assessment Program – or MAP – tests.
