The Chiefs released unhappy safety Jerome Woods on Thursday. It was a move that all parties involved expected. The only thing that appears odd is the timing. If the Chiefs would’ve waited until after June 1st, they would’ve saved $600,000 against the salary cap. Instead, by releasing him so soon the Chiefs will have to dish out around $3.5 million.
Woods became unhappy with the Chiefs after being benched last year in favor of newly acquired free agent Sammy Knight. The benching came despite Woods signing a major deal and making the Pro Bowl in 2003. This offseason, Woods was asked to take a pay cut which he declined to do.
Kansas City begins a three day minicamp today and the additions of safety draft picks Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page really made Woods expendable.
