Some sports fans in the Show-Me State will be cheering for a big three year old today. The 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby is this afternoon and the horse in the number spot is Steppenwolfer. He’s not a Missouri native, but his owners are. Robert and Lawana Low are from Springfield…they bought Steppenwolfer about a year ago. He’ll come into the derby as a 30-to-1 favorite.

You have go to back over a hundred years to find a Derby-winning horse from Missouri. That was Elwood in 1904.

Robby Albarado will be Steppenwolfer’s jockey. Albarado has 556 wins at Churchill downs, ninth best in track history. Albarado’s making his eight Kentucky Derby appearance. The last time out, Steppenwolfer finished second at the Arkansas Derby, which was last month. In his eight races, Steppenwolfer has three wins.
