State law on sex education would change under a bill passing the House and moving to the Senate. Current law requires students to take a sexual education course, unless their parents object. The bill would require that students receive the permission of their parents to enroll in sex ed classes. Sponsor Cynthia Davis of O’Fallon says the bill forces parents to become more involved in speaking with their children about sex. Abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, would be barred from teaching sex ed courses or contributing material under provisions in the bill. The House has approved the bill on a 95-to-60. It now is in the hands of the Senate.
