The Senate takes up the employment security bill – legislation that aims to encourage those out of work to seek employment and to restrict or deny unemployment benefits to those who lose their jobs through misconduct and/or drug or alcohol abuse. Senator Luann Ridgeway of Smithville, the sponsor, says one of the key ingredients in the bill is the requirement that anyone receiving jobless benefits try to fine work. Also in the bill, any person who tests positive for drug or alcohol abuse could be fired and disqualified from unemployment benefits. Debate was stopped with no action being taken. The session ends in just over two weeks and the Senate will have to pass a bill, by that time, if it is to be reconciled with the House version of the legislation. The bill is HB 1456.
