Military members and their families stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba are getting some help making their educational goals from a Missouri college. This past weekend, Columbia College graduated its first class of about 30 students at the outpost on the island. Ellen Soucy is the director of the college’s “Gitmo” campus. Soucy says because of the unfriendly situation with the Cuban government, there are restrictions that can pose some real challenges to learning. She says flights and shipments are limited in and out of the base, and that means it can be tough to get supplies such as the books needed for the classes. Soucy believes that only adds to how special getting a degree at Guantanamo Bay really is.
