Caution Advised About Clean-Up Donations

March 17, 2006 By admin Leave a Comment

Many Missourians continue to clean up after the devastating storms that rolled through the state. Plenty more are looking for ways to help. The Better Business Bureau of Kansas City has some tips on how to make a contribution without becoming a fraud victim. If you’re looking to make a donation, Cherie Reese with the Kansas City office says the first thing you should do is look up the charity. Make sure charities don’t spend more than 35%of contributions on fund-raising, check on how the charity is governed, including conflict of interest policies, and look at the roster. Reese says many times, those charities that call are the ones to suspect the most. And Reese says be aware that some bogus charities will use a name similar to a legitimate charity.
