Today is a day of decision for 1,300 United Auto Workers at the Ford Hazelwood plant just outside St. Louis. They must decide whether to accept one of five buyout packages being offered by Ford or stay with the company and hope a job opens. Ford closes Hazelwood this week with plans to permanently close it and four other assembly plants by 2008. Two other assembly plants are set to close by 2012 as the company seeks to remain competitive in the increasingly competitive auto industry.
