Kansas City baseball legend Buck O’Neil will learn earlly this afternon if he’s made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. A 12 member committee has voted in a special election on 39 candidates from the Negro Leagues and the pre-Negro Leagues era. O’Neil is now 94. He was the first Black coach in Major League Baseball. He’s been instrumental in getting 18 Negro League players into the Hall of Fame. As a scout for the Chicago Cubs, he discovered Lou Brock. He won the Negro League batting championship twice and led the Kansas City Monarchs to a Negro Leagues World Championship as a player and managed the team to four championships later.
