Day’s 37, And Late Three Pointer, Lead UMKC To Win

February 24, 2006 By admin Leave a Comment

Of the 37 points Quinton Day scored on Thursday night, none were bigger than the three he scored with eight seconds to go in UMKC’s 73-70 win over Valparaiso. Day’s three-pointer broke a 70-70 tie and clinched the third seed in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament.

UMKC had to do some scrambling to win the game. Valpo took a 54-39 lead when Dan Oppland made good on a lay up with 13:05 to go. UMKC responded with a 19-4 run to tie the game at 58-58 with 6:43 to go. Day scored nine of those points.

After tying the game, UMKC eventually built a lead as large as six points before VU roared back to tie the game with three pointer from Ali Berdiel, which preceded Day’s heroics.

Kalu Guasco was the only other ‘Roo in double-digits, he had 14 points.

UMKC improved to 13-13 on the season and 10-5 in the Mid-Con, while Valpo fell to 16-10 and 8-7. The Kangaroos finish off the regular season on Saturday at Western Illinois.
