The Cardinals added another possible middle reliever to their ranks on Monday by signing veteran Jeff Nelson to a minor league contract. Nelson, who’s 39, made 49 appearances with the Mariners in 2005 and went 1-3 with a save. He had a 3.93 ERA last season.

Nelson, who has 13 years of major league experience, has never started a game in his career. He’s 48-44 with 33 saves and a lifetime ERA of 3.41.
