Dispute Over Stem Cell Initiative Language Moves Forward in Court

December 15, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

A Cole County Judge in Jefferson City has set the stage for a January hearing that could include arguments over when life actually starts. Groups for and against the stem cell research protection amendment want their case heard. Proponents of the measure say it could lead to medical breakthroughs. Opponents say the ballot language is misleading, and those breakthroughs could come at the cost of another human life. Connie Farrow with the Missouri Coalition for Livesaving Cures says opponents trying to change the language in the petition that would set up a vote next November are just tying to keep it from ever being voted on. Kevin Theriot represents the Missouri Roman Catholic Bishops and the Missouri Baptist Convention. He denies his clients are trying to deny anyone the chance to sign a petition or vote on the measure. Each side will get the chance to make arguments before a judge on January 19th.
