Lilburn Boggs failed as a storekeeper, then got elected to the Missouri Senate, lieutenant governorship, and governorship. He’s the man who threatened to exterminate the Mormons. He’s the governor who turned a $75,000 project to build a new capitol into a $200,000 project, and who almost went to war with the Territory of Iowa. He also survived an assassination attempt. Lilburn Boggs ran away from home and volunteered for the War of 1812. Then he came to Missouri and became cashier at the first chartered territorial bank in Missouri. A couple of years later he became a storekeeper at Franklin. After his store failed in 1819, he became the deputy factor and Indian trader at George Sibley’s Fort Osage. Later, he was at Harmony Mission.
