Royals’ radio broadcaster and the late Dizzy Dean are among ten finalists nominated for the 2005 Ford C. Frick Award, which is given each year to broadcasters who have made significant contributions to baseball. Winners of the award are recognized in the media portion of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Matthews has broadcast Royals games for 37 years and has been nominated for the award, but has never been a finalist.
After finishing a Hall of Fame playing career, which lasted from 1930-1947, Dean broadcast games for both the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Browns. From 1954-1965, he helped broadcast CBS television’s “Game of the Week”.
