In years past, the outcome might have been different, but the Chiefs’ defense is no longer the doormat it once was, and as a result they came away with a 26-16 win over the Patriots at Arrowhead.
Kansas City built a 26-3 lead, but New England stormed back with a touchdown late in the third quarter and another early on in the fourth to cut the Chiefs’ advantage to 26-16 advantage. With 5:46 remaining, the Patriots took over on their own 18 yard line. As the drive approached midfield, Brady was picked off by Greg Wesley at the Kansas City 32-yard line. It was Wesley’s third interception of the day.
After the Chiefs were held to a three-and-out, the Patriots got the ball back with 2:39 remaining. Another drive was thwarted, when Sammy Knight picked off Brady to seal the win for Kansas City. It was his first interception of the season and the 36th of his career.
Brady was sacked four times and threw four interceptions to go with his 248 yards and touchdown. The Patriots gained just 74 yards rushing on Sunday.
Larry Johnson rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Trent Green took care of business in the air, with 323 yards passing and a touchdown pass. With the win, the Chiefs have planted themselves firmly in the middle of the wild card race at 7-4.
