He was a simple man who trusted people, but lost his lands because his brief and general descriptions weren’t good enough. So, at the request of the Spanish government, he gave up his American citizenship and came to Missouri. He was in his mid-sixties. He became a judge in the territory that would become Missouri. Even today there’s a sizeable disagreement about whether he is still here.
