The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a stay on a federal judge’s order that the state must take a female prisoner to an abortion clinic to get an abortion she wants. The state argues it is a security risk, and it is against state law to spend tax dollars helping a woman get an abortion. The transportation and security costs would be at state expense. Republican Governor Matt Blunt admits he has doubts, based on his perception of Democrat Attorney General Jay Nixon’s stand on pro-life issues, whether or not Nixon would vigorously defend the state’s position in the matter. Attorney General spokesman Scott Holste takes exception with what he terms as “armchair quarterbacking.” Holste points out that the Attorney General sought and received a stay Friday night from the U.S. Supreme Court as evidence that Nixon is aggressively defending the state’s position.
