Supporters of stem cell research, especially Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, have decided to attempt to amend the State Constitution to keep the Legislature from banning such research. The Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative could land on the November ballot next year, if supporters succeed in gathering nearly 150,000 signatures. Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures Chairman Donn Rubin says such an amendment would end the uncertainty surrounding the issue. Rubin argues the state needs to move so that it can provide the access to capital that young companies, incubators and research parks need. The amendment would allow any stem cell research allowed by federal law.
