An audit criticizes the State Social Services Department over its management of two state programs that help Medicaid recipients. The Social Services Department administers one program supplying durable medical equipment and another providing non-emergency transportation for Medicaid recipients. State Auditor Claire McCaskill says taxpayers are paying too much for wheelchairs and other equipment because there is no competetive bidding process. The Department’s Deborah Scott says bidding is being considered, but officials are looking at other ways of cutting costs. As for transportation, McCaskill says the state is not being given adequate documentation to determine whether there’s waste. Scott says the Department is already looking for new providers.
