The St. Louis Blues have named forward Dallas Drake its captain for the 2005-2006 season. Two former captains are no longer with the team, as Al MacInnis retired and Chris Pronger was traded.

“I’m honored and I’m excited. It’s a good feeling when guys think you could have that responsibility and I’m up for the challenge,” Drake said.

Drake, a 12-year veteran, enters his fifth season with the Blues. He’s never been a captain in the NHL, though has been an assistant in the NHL and in college. While he looks forward to the opportunity, he won’t rule with an iron fist. “We’ve got a lot of guys for everybody to lean on, so I’ll be leaning on everybody,” he said. “Dougie and Walt (Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk) and players like that have been captains in the past.”

Assistant captains are Doug Weight and Barret Jackman.
