The Royals avoided being swept by the Rangers by exploding for a 17-8 win at Kauffman Stadium Sunday. The Royals got things going with three runs in the second, thanks to a home run from Angel Berroa, who finished with five RBI’s.

In the third inning, Matt Stairs walked with the bases loaded, while Emil Brown and Mark Teahen drove in two apiece with doubles. The Royals led 8-1 at that point.

Berroa, Brown and Teahen were a combined 5-for-13 with 12 RBI’s and four runs. The top of the lineup did a good job of getting on base for the previously mentioned players. Aaron Guiel, Denny Hocking and Terrence Long were 7-for-13, scoring three runs apiece

Jimmy Gobble made his first start of the season and lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run off five hits and a walk. Abraham Nunez, who relieved Gobble in the fifth, got the win.
