State Auditor Claire McCaskill ends the speculation about her political future by announcing she is running for Jim Talent’s U.S. Senate seat. About 100 people watched as McCaskill, joined by members of her family, stood on the steps of an old feed mill in Houston, in Texas County. The mill is of significance to McCaskill, who, as a child, lived in Houston. The building was once owned by her grandfather. McCaskill, who had long been the Democrats’ choice to run against Republican Talent, says it’s time to bring back what she calls “good, old-fashioned common sense” to Washington, D.C. McCaskill’s choice of Houston as the location of her announcement involves more than the family connection. It is intended to make it clear that she is not writing off rural Missouri. McCaskill says that while many of the so-called experts say she should concentrate on the major metropolitan areas of St. Louis and Kansas City, she insists she will not abandon outstate Missouri.
