The Royals scattered five hits on Sunday in a 10-3 loss to the Yankees. Starting pitcher Zack Greinke was charged with seven of those runs in a performance that yielded his Major League leading 16th loss of the season.

Greinke got behind the eight ball early when Bernie Williams singled in Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield in the first inning.

Down 2-1 in the third inning, Greinke serve up a three-run homer to Jason Giambi to make it 5-1. It was Giambi’s 22nd home run of the season. But Giambi wasn’t finished with his torment of Greinke. He blasted his 23rd homer, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning to push New York’s lead to 7-1 and the day was done for Greinke. With that homer, Giambi drove in the 1,000th run of his career.

It didn’t seem to matter who was on the mound, though. Giambi drove in his sixth and seventh runs of the game in the sixth inning when he laced a two-run single off Jeremy Affeldt to extend the lead 9-1. Bernie Williams singled in a run later in the sixth to make it 10-1.

Mike Sweeney’s two-run homer in the eighth inning rounded out the scoring. It was his 19th homer of the season. The Royals were swept by the Yankees.
