Wizards Bow Out Of U.S. Open Cup

August 25, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

The Kansas City Wizards will not defend their U.S. Open Cup Title from a year ago. They were knocked out of the United State’s oldest soccer tournament, with a 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Thunder of the United Soccer League on Wednesday.

Striker Johnny Menyongar, of Liberia, scored twice and assisted in another goal to lift the Thunder to the semifinals. The Thunder is just 5-9-10 USL play this season and out of the playoff picture. This is the third time in the tournament that they’ve knocked off a Major League Soccer team.

The U.S. Open Cup is open to both professional and amateur soccer teams.

The Wizards will now focus on Friday night’s game against Columbus.
