Zack Greinke extended his dubious hold on the Major League loss lead on Tuesday, as the Royals fell to the Red Sox 5-2. It was Greinke’s 15th loss of the season.

The game was scoreless until the Red Sox rallied for three runs in the third inning. Former Royals outfielder Johnny Damon doubled to center, to score St. Louis native Bill Mueller to break the tie. Former Cardinal shortstop Edgar Renteria drove in Damon with a single and David Ortiz made it 3-0 with a double to drive in Renteria.

Greinke allowed Jason Varitek’s 21st homer of the season wit ha solo shot in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Trot Nixon doubled in Renteria for Boston’s final run.

Kansas City’s only runs came in the ninth inning when Donnie Murphy singled in Emil Brown and Mark Teahen with a single.

The Royals have dropped nine straight home games, which is a club record.
