While the Cardinals may be getting used to late comebacks, they weren’t able to pull the trick off again on Sunday. San Francisco took a 4-0 lead and, despite runs from St. Louis in the eighth and ninth, the Giants held on to win 4-2.

Cardinals’ starter Jeff Suppan allowed three runs on Sunday, but only one was earned. With two outs in the fourth inning and the score tied 0-0, Moises Alou reached first base thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Scott Seabol. Ray Durham followed up with a single. Next up was Pedro Feliz, who drove in Alou with a ground-rule double and Edgardo Alfonzo singled in Durham and Feliz to make it 3-0.

Suppan led off the seventh inning with a walk to Mike Matheny, who later scored on a single by Randy Winn to give San Francisco a 4-0 advantage.

Seabol attempted to make up for his fielding mistake by driving in the first run of the game for St. Louis in the eighth. He singled in a run, scoring Hector Luna with two outs. The rally ended with a John Mabry strikeout.

In the ninth, Albert Pujols attempted to conjure up some two-out magic with an RBI single, but like the eighth inning, the ninth also ended with a strikeout—this time from So Taguchi.

Suppan (12-9) was charged with the loss in six innings of work. He was charged with one run off seven hits and two walks.
