Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is taking action against some funeral plan sellers he says are not complying with the law. Nixon has filed nine separate criminal and civil actions against operators he claims have ripped off more than 500 consumers for more than $800,000 in services. Most of the services were for pre-need funeral arrangements and headstones. Nixon says one of the most concerning things he saw during his investigation was that too many funeral operators were not putting the 80 percent of the money collected for a plan into a trust account. Nixon says people buy the plans to have assurances that things will be taken care of. He says consumers can protect themselves by never paying cash for a plan, checking their accounts on a regular basis, and keeping records of payments.
