The story is told that Franklin D. Roosevelt called the head of the Federal Bureau of Public Roads into his office one day and drew three east-west and three north-south lines on a United States map. Then he turned to bureau chief Thomas H. McDonald and said. “This is your interstate system.”
How big is the system that grew from those six lines? The Missouri Highway and Transportation Department has called it the “biggest, most demanding construction project in the history of mankind.”
