Outfielder Cody Haerther was called up from the Cardinals Class-A team in Palm Beach Florida a couple of weeks ago and last night that decision paid off quite nicely for the team. Haerther drove in five of Springfield’s six runs in a 6-3 win over Corpus Christi.

After Aaron Herr led off the fifth inning with a triple, Haerther got Springfield on the board with his third home run to make it 2-0. In the sixth inning Haerther struck again with a three-run double to give the Cardinals a 5-0 bulge.

Starting pitcher Oscar Alvarez lasted five innings for Springfield and didn’t allow a single run despite surrendering seven hits. He struck out seven and walked none to improve to 5-2 on the season. Reliever Cory Doyne pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his seventh save.

With the win, the Cardinals are now 9-9 on the second half of the season and they trail first-place Wichita by just one game.
