After two rounds of stroke play and four rounds of match play and a 36-hole match play final, it all came down to a three-foot putt at the 98th Missouri Amateur Golf Championship. To be more precise, it came down to a missed three-foot putt.

Springfield native Matt Keith needed all of the final 18 holes of match play to beat University of Missouri golfer John Kelly on Sunday at Milwood Golf and Racquet Club in Ozark, Missouri. Kelly’s missed putt would have forced a playoff, had it gone in.

Statistically speaking, Keith and Kelly represented the most unlikely finals match up in the history of the tournament. Of 64 players to advance to match play, Keith, who was the 58th seed and Kelly who was the 57th seed are the two lowest seeded players to meet in the finals.

Keith, who just finished two years at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, is still doesn’t know where he’ll be going to school next fall. Kelly, who hails from St. Louis, will be a junior at MU in the fall.
