Rehnquist is considered likely to retire because he has thyroid cancer. Danforth has told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that conservatives, particularly religious conserevatives, are going to want someone they they can count on and the liberals probably won’t support anybody Bush would nominate. Thomas was the chief advocate for Clarence Thomas when he was confirmed as a justice in 1991.
