Their father raised his four boys strictly. One said later, “He didn’t give us any money to spend so that we couldn’t get into trouble. He didn’t spare the rod…and he worked the tar out of us.” The father promised his sons he’d give each a gold watch if they reached twenty-one without smoking or drinking. All four claimed their watches. More than a quarter century later the most famous of the four boys would write,”Since the coach should be an example to the many aspiring young athletes in the community, he should not drink, smoke, or swear in public…He must be above reproach in all financial, moral and social dealings.” The man’s name is Don Faurot.
