Their father raised his four boys strictly. One said later, “He didn’t give us any money to spend so that we couldn’t get into trouble. He didn’t spare the rod…and he worked the tar out of us.” The father promised his sons he’d give each a gold watch if they reached twenty-one without smoking or drinking.
