Getting a new driver’s license or renewing an existing one is about to become a little less automatic. Starting July 1st, anyone requesting a new or renewed driver’s license will have to prove what is known as lawful presence in the United States. Maura Browning with the State Revenue Department says there are no exceptions. Missourians receiving renewal notices in the mail are already being told of the changes. For most Americans, a birth certificate or U.S. Passport will be sufficient. Foreigners living legally in the U.S. will have to show a green card or visa authorizing U.S. residency. The legislation was approved by the General Assembly in 2004 and signed by then-Governor Holden as a homeland security measure.
