Matt Morris tossed a four hitter on Monday, as the Cardinals topped the Red Sox 7-1 at Busch Stadium. Morris, who lost Game 2 of the World Series against Boston, improved to a perfect 7-0 and lowered his ERA to 3.43. Morris had one strikeout and one walk in the victory.

The only run the Red Sox scored off Morris came in the top of the second inning, when Jason Varitek singled in Manny Ramirez. St. Louis countered in the bottom half of the inning when Abraham Nunez drove in Reggie Sanders with a single. Catcher Yadier Molina broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI single to score Larry Walker and the Cardinals never trailed again.

David Eckstein drove in a run in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly and two more in the eighth with a two-run triple. Molina finished with two RBI’s.

Former Cardinal shortstop Edgar Renteria was given a standing ovation in his first at bat but finished 0-for-4.

It was only the fourth time since interleague play began in 1997 that the two teams in the previous year’s World Series have met.
