Protesters Gather Outside Governor’s Mansion Over Confederate Flag

June 6, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

About twenty people with small American flags have demonstated in front of the Governor’s mansion in Jefferson City while Confederate Memorial Day Services were underway at Higginsville. Higginsville is the home of the Confederate Memorial Historic Site, a cemetery for Confederate veterans of the Civil War. The protestors were upset that Governor Matt Blunt had allowed the Confederate battle flag to be flown at the Higginsville site for the ceremonies. It was flown beneath the flags of the United States and the state of Missouri. Former Governor Bob Holden’s press secretary had ordered Confederate Flags removed from Civil War-related sites more than two years ago.
