Shelby – remnants of a proud group of Missourians who called themselves “The Iron Brigade.” The nucleus of the Iron Brigade was formed not long after Fort Sumter. Shelby organized and equipped, at his own expense, a company of horseman who joined the State Guards and served as calvary scouts during the campaign of 1861.
