State Baseball Finals To Be Decided In Classes 1 and 2 Thursday

June 2, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

The Class 1 and 2 baseball championships could go to the same teams that won the titles in 2004. Hallsville advanced to the Class 2 title game with a 7-0 win over Clearwater in the semifinals. Pitchers Matt Frevert, Shane Burr and Charlie Corwin combined for a two hitter, as the Indians improved to 23-5.

Their opponent will be Mansfield High School, which topped Iberia 9-7. After taking a 5-1 lead, Mansfield gave up six runs in the fifth inning and the Rangers took a 7-5 advantage. Mansfield bounced back in the sixth with four runs to get the win.

Hallsville and Mansfield are both looking for their third state championship

In Class 1, Archie is looking for back-to-back titles after topping Northeast (Cairo) High School 6-1 on Wednesday. Whirlwinds starting pitcher Grant Wilburn tossed a complete game four-hitter and went 1-for-2 with a run.

Plato High School will make its first trip to the championship game after topping Thayer 4-1. Eagles starting pitcher Craig Penley allowed one run off five hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts for the win.
