Southeast Missourian Spending Memorial Day Weekend With Military in Africa

May 26, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

One Missourian is planning on being out of town this Memorial Day Weekend – way out of town. Perryville native Charles Martens is a Senior Chief Petty Officer serving in a US Navy construction battalion, a Sea-Bee unit. His unit is in Djibouti, a dry, impoverished country on the Horn of Africa’s east coast. He’s fighting the war on terrorism in a different way. His job is to help refurbish schools, hospitals, and the communities as a whole, giving the locals a good impression of America.
