Sierra Club Claims Victory During Legislative Session

May 23, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

Victory in the Legislature can sometimes be achieved through defeat. For the Sierra Club, a big victory in the legislative session came when the House defeated a proposed relaxing of the regulations of huge hog and poultry farms. The Sierra Club’s Carla Klein says she wasn’t sure she had the votes to defeat the measure when it came to the House floor late in the session. The bill would have given regulation of the huge hog and poultry farms over to the Clean Water Commission from the Department of Natural Resources. It would have aligned state regulation with federal regulation and would have prohibited counties from enacting tougher environmental standards.
