The role of Missourians in the setlement of the West would fill volumes. They were first to cross an important pass, blaze a major trail, settle an area which would later become a state. Missourians also have helped others organize their governments and gain statehood. One of them is Joseph Kemp Toole who, as Governor of Montana, faced a unique situation when that territory became a state.
