Cardinal third baseman Scott Rolen isn’t expected to play until after a stint on the disabled list. An official decision hasn’t been made concerning Rolen’s status, but team physician Dr. George Paletta thinks Rolen’s sprained right shoulder is serious enough to prevent him from playing soon.

It’s certainly not going to be a quick recovery,” Paletta said on Wednesday. He indicated that Rolen popped his shoulder out of the socket, that it had popped back in. Typically this goes one of two ways: They either wake up the next morning a little bit sore (but) feel pretty good or they wake up the next morning and their rotator cuff is shut down and they’re having trouble lifting their arm.” The latter was true for Rolen on Wednesday.

Tests will be run today to determine how much damage he did and a decision regarding his playing status will be made.
