Jeff Suppan lasted seven innings for his third win of the season, Larry Walker went 3-for-6 with three RBI’s and the Cardinals topped the Dodgers 9-3 in St. Louis. Julian Tavarez pitched the final inning and 2/3’s without allowing a hit or a walk. John Mabry got the start at third base, with Rolen injured and went 3-for-5 with two runs
St. Louis started slow and steady, scoring a single run in each of the first three innings with RBI’s from Roger Cedeno, Walker and Mark Grudzielanek. The Cardinals blew the game open in the fifth inning when Suppan started a three-run rally with an RBI single to score Grudzielanek. David Eckstein singled to center to score Einar Diaz and Walker gournded into a fielder’s choice to score Suppan.
In the seventh inning, Larry Walker doubled to right field for his third and final RBI of the evening. Diaz drove in a run in the eighth for the final run of the game.
Suppan lasted seven innings and allowed three runs off nine hits. He struck out seven batters and walked none. Randy Flores and Tavarez didn’t allow a base runner over the final two innings.
