For almost a century Missouri criminals all went to one place, the Missouri State Penitentiary. Whether they were first-time check forgers or multiple offenders and killers, they were all put behind the walls on the riverfront of Jefferson City. But with the coming of the twentieth century, prison reform took hold in the country and by the 1920s it was felt in Missouri.
